Today is Birth Anniversary of Madan Mohan Malaviya
MADAN MOHAN MALAVIYA ( 1861-1946)
BIRTH DAY – DECEMBER 25, 1861
DEATH DAY – NOVEMBER 12, 1946
Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya was an great Indian educationist and Hindu Nationalist. He played great role in Indian Independence Movement. He was also called “ MAHA MANA “
He was born in Allahabad in U.P. in India on December 25,1861 to Brijnath and Moona Devi. His ancestors originally hailed from Malwa, Madya Pradesh. His father was a learned man in Sanskrit scriptures and used to recite the “ Bhagavath Katha “ to earn a living.
He studied his primary education at Hardeva’s Dharma Gyanopadesh Pathasala. Later he joined Allahabad Zilla School. He matriculated from Muir Central College in 1879. He completed B.A. at University of Calcutta.
In July 1884 Madan Mohan malaviya started his career as teacher in Allahabad District school. He was married to Kundan Devi of Mirazapur in 1878.
In December 1886 Malaviya attended 2nd Indian National Congress session in Calcutta under chairmanship of Dada bhai Naoroji. In July 1887 he left his school job and joined as Editor of national weekly “ Hindustani “. He worked as co-editor of “ The Indian Union “ . He completed LLB and started practicing law at Allahabad District Court in 1891.
He was the congress president for 4 times in 1909 Lahore, 1918 Delhi, 1930 Delhi, 1932 Calcutta. He served the congress for 50 years. He opposed the separate electorate for Muslims under the Lucknow pact of 1916.
To redeem his resolve to serve the cause of Education and social service he renounced his well established practice of law in 1911. But when 177 freedom fighters were convicted to be hanged in chouri-choura case he appeared before court despite his vow and got acquitted 156 freedom fighters.
He was opposed to the politics of appeasement and participation of congress in Khilafath Movement. He was important figure in Non-cooperation movement.
Malaviya was delegate at the First round table conference in 1930. During Civil Disobedience movement he was arrested.
He started “ Congress Nationalist Party “ .The party contested 1934 elections to the central legislature and won 12 seats,
Malaviya is most prominently known for founding the Benarus Hindu University ( BHU ) in 1916. He was vice chancellor of BHU from 1919 to 1938. He started the English daily “ Leader “ in 1909 with the help of Motilal Nehru. He started Hindi paper MARYADA. He started “ Sanatana Dharma “ in 1933 from BHU. He took active control of Hindustan times from Delhi in 1924.
He started “ Prayaga Seva Samiti” in 1915. It later took form of “ Akhila Bharatiya Seva Samiti”. In 1918 “ Boy Scouts “ was started under Akhila bharatiya seva samiti.
He was a great freedom fighter, Hindu nationalist and great Educationist. Today his Birth anniversary. We shall remember his works on his Birth anniversary.
